Hale End academy graduate Eddie Nketiah then thought he had doubled the lead shortly before the half an hour mark only for VAR to rule his finish as offside but Saka was awarded a penalty for a foul in the same passage of play.
The England international made no mistake from 12 yards but Cristiano Ronaldo scored just two minutes later to bring the away side back into proceedings. Tavares then gave away a silly penalty at the beginning of the second half but countryman Bruno Fernandes could only find the post with his spot-kick before Granit Xhaka clinched all three points for the Gunners thanks to a stunning long-range effort.
