Tommy Sheridan's Glasgow mum was 'some wummin' who fought for a better world

Touching tributes have been pouring in for Tommy Sheridan's mum, Alice, following her death in a tragic flat fire in Cardonald on Sunday evening.

Alice Sheridan lost her life after a blaze struck her flat in Invergyle Drive just before 8pm on March 12.

Emergency services, including police and firefighters, raced to the scene to put out the fire. Sadly, nothing could be done to save the 84-year-old who has been described as "some wummin" by her grief-stricken son Tommy.

Alice was born in Govan and fought injustice all her life, Tommy said in a heartfelt tribute on social media.

While employed by the Royal Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (RSSPCC), she worked with children and adults who were victims of sexual abuse and helped hundreds of people.

She was also a proud gran and great-gran whose "spirit will live on".

Tommy said: "It is with great regret and broken hearts that myself and my two sisters Lynn and Carol have to inform our friends that our mum has sadly been taken from us last night. Alice Sheridan was an incredible mum to us but also a very proud grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, aunt and friend to many.

"She was a passionate trade unionist and socialist who believed a better world was possible if enough of us fought for it. Her work with bar staff to organise them into a union and secure better wages and conditions was inspiring.

"Her efforts to support the battered wives movement and secure trade union backing for a refuge is a matter of record and source of pride. Her role in the titanic battle against Thatcher's poll tax was critical and pivotal in the success of that campaign.

"Her commitment to Scottish independence and opposition to the poisonous Murdoch media empire was peerless. She was some wummin.

"This contribution is painful to write but Alice will never be forgotten and her spirit will live on in our hearts and all those hearts of people who believe in fighting injustice and standing up against poverty and the abuse of power. Rest In Eternal Peace Mum. RIP Alice Sheridan."

Glasgow Live readers were shocked at the devastating news which broke this morning (March 13) with some paying tribute to Alice.

Jamiieeleiigh ES said: "My thoughts are with you and your family. Such a beautiful woman from the inside and out. Heaven needed a hero and that was surely her. Only if this were different but always remember she's never that far away."

Violet Kennedy wrote: "Rest Easy Alice thank you for helping me be the person I am today . You fought and helped so many women . You have us strength to speak up . Horrendous way to die . Thoughts are with your family and friends."

Norman Wilson added: "Heartfelt condolences to the family, no matter what age you are losing your mum is hard, even more so in such tragic circumstances. May she Rest in Peace."
