When you have coaches college basketball for 27 years, won a national championship, won multiple conference championships, etc., it is difficult to have a true first, but it looks like we had one last night from Tom Izzo and Michigan State basketball.
According to Chris Solari of the Detroit Free Press, along with multiple other reports, Tom Izzo decided not to let his players speak to the media after last night’s loss to Penn State, in what appears to be a first in the history of his time at MSU.
I’m not sure what message Izzo was trying to send here, many have pointed out that this actually let a lot of those guys off the hook who probably didn’t want to face the media after an embarrassing performance where they let a 12-point second half lead slip through their fingers, but we’ll have to wait and hear more about it from Izzo himself.
One thing is for sure though, this has been a unique season for the Spartans, with a level of inconsistency we may have never seen from an MSU roster, and it’s not shocking that we are seeing some new developments from Izzo as he tries to course-correct midseason.
Checked with @joerexrode and he can’t remember Izzo never making one or two players at least available after a game. Me either, and we span almost the entirety of Izzo’s 27 seasons.
