Tom Huddlestone's move to Manchester United came as quite a surprise to many — including the man himself.
The former England midfielder was without a club in the summer having ended his second spell with Hull City. But a call out of the blue from a former teammate resulted in him taking up the offer from United to be player-coach for the club's Under-21s.
It is a role that has become more and more popular in recent years with Premier League clubs opting to appoint established professionals at the end of their career to perform these 'hybrid' roles. Speaking about how the move to United came about, Huddlestone told Soccer AM: "It was quite random to be fair. Paul McShane, who I played with at Hull, did the role last year before retiring.
