Tom Cruise in talks with Universal to be first actor to shoot film in outer space

Tom Cruise is reportedly set to take his fighter pilot skills to the next level by jetting into outer space to film his next movie.

The Top Gun star wowed audiences around the world with his aircraft-flying talent when they sat down to watch the sequel to the 1986 box office hit, Top Gun: Maverick, over the summer.

Now the Mission Impossible actor - who famously performs all his own stunts - is said to want to take things even further than the Danger Zone, by heading all the way to outer space to shoot a film.

While we are used to seeing the actor hanging off the side of a skyscraper, zooming through traffic, or tearing through the skies in a fighter jet, this latest plan could see Tom bring a whole new meaning to his international superstar status.

Tom is said to be in talks with Universal Films Entertainment Group to try and secure a deal that would see him head to the International Space Station alongside all other required members of the cast and crew.

TMZ report Tom has actually been talking about his idea for several years but had to put discussions on hold because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The success of the Top Gun movies - which have now exceeded $700M at the domestic box office, and a whopping $1.4B globally - hasn't done Tom any harm with being able to call the shots for his next big movie adventure.

Universal also appear to be keen to embark on intergalactic travel with Tom, after chairman of the company Donna Langley confirmed they're looking to create something out of this world.

She said: "I think Tom Cruise is taking us to space, he’s taking the world to space. That’s the plan. We have a great project in development with Tom … Taking a rocket up to the Space Station and shooting."

Details of the plot have also been discussed with the film sounding like the typical sci-fi experience moviegoers who indulge the genre will love.

The general gist of the film appears to be that a human man from earth will jet into space "to save the day."

The whole concept is groundbreaking with Tom set to become not just the first-ever actor to shoot a movie in space, but also the first to step out and do an actual walk in outer space.

While it seems the project is going to get a green light from the movie studio as yet no news of potential additional cast members has been released, but Top Gun fans could be hopeful of Rooster star Miles Teller joining Tom on his intergalactic trip after loving the on-screen chemistry between the duo.

Mirror Online has contacted Tom's representatives for comment.
