Very little is known about Alejandro González Iñarritu's next film, other than it's his first in English project since 2015's Oscar-winning turn in "The Revenant." But the project just found its leading man and it's one of the biggest names in Hollywood: Tom Cruise. The announcement has been confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter and is bound to generate massive buzz around the still-untitled film which Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment are in talks to acquire.
There are no plot details for the film but the project was written by Iñárritu himself along with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris and Nicolás Giacobone. It will be his fourth project with Giacobone after "Biutiful," "Birdman" and "Bardo" and his second with Dinelaris.
As for Cruise, this marks the first step in his massive movie partnership with Warner Bros that gives the actor and his production company the right to jointly develop and produce original. The move also brought forward a series of rumors that Cruise is eager to step away from franchise projects in favor of working with auteurs, something that seems to be confirmed with his upcoming collaboration with Iñárritu, one of the most sought after authors in the industry. It's worth noting that Cruse is currently working on the final "Mission: Impossible" film which may affect the start of production of his next film somewhat.
The move was also considered a sort of homecoming for Cruise who starred in such Warner Bros' titles as "Edge of Tomorrow," "Rock of Ages," "Magnolia," "Eyes Wide Shut," "Interview With the Vampire" and "Risky Business," some of them essential hits in the actor's career.
Iñárritu was the first Mexican to be nominated for the best director Oscar, winning the award in consecutive years for "Birdman" and "The Revenant." He last directed the Spanish-language "Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths," which was released in 2022 to mixed reviews. His films have won eight Academy awards and a special achievement Academy Award for the virtual-reality short film "Flesh and Sand."
