Tom Cruise could become the first civilian to spacewalk for an upcoming film

Real life action man Tom Cruise could be blasted off into space to perform a spacewalk for an upcoming film, becoming the first civilian to do so.

Universal chairwoman Dame Donna Langley hinted at the future movie, which would see the 60-year-old Hollywood actor making history at the International Space Station if all goes to plan.

The British film executive, 54, said Tom would be flown into space before disembarking from the rocket. All of this would be caught on camera for the film.

It would be one of the many amazing things the Top Gun star has done for the silver screen – from learning how to fly planes, abseiling down the tallest building in the world and scaling cliffs.

"We have a great project in development with Tom that does contemplate him taking a rocket to the Space Station.

"And hopefully he will become the first civilian to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station," Donna explained to the BBC.

She also shared a few details about Tom's character in the secretive blockbuster.

"He will play a down-on-his-luck guy who finds himself in the position of being the only person who could save Earth," she said.

The idea for the film first occurred in 2020 and while the stunt is still an "aspiration" for the studio, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Nasa both on board to assist with the project.

Doug Liman, who worked with Tom on The Edge of Tomorrow, is set to direct.

In an interview with Deadline, the director said: "I think the reason that Tom is such a superstar is, as much as we’re talking about making a movie not on Earth, I think Tom very much has both of his feet planted on the ground.

"No matter what the movie is he’s like, 'I’m getting to go make a movie.' That enthusiasm! He has made god knows how many movies, and he hasn’t lost that enthusiasm."

"When a producer proposes something crazy to you, like, let’s try to shoot a movie in outer space, and Nasa and SpaceX sign on, and Tom Cruise signs on…you’re just a little bit more receptive," Doug confessed in an interview with Thrillist.
