Tom Cruise and Top Gun co-star Jennifer Connolly beam at Cannes Film Festival

Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connolly looked in sync as they arrived at the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday.

The pair were all smiles as they made their appearance at the Palais des Festivals in the south of France during the premiere for their upcoming film Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise was in good spirits as he posed for the cameras while looking after his co-star on the red carpet at the star-studded event.

The 59-year-old lit up Cannes in a black velvet lapel tuxedo with matching black bow tie, with Connelly, 51, looking elegant in a metallic shoulderless maxi dress with black detail.

Connelly joins the franchise as Penny Benjamin.

Tom will reprise his role as titular character Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the sequel to the 1986 hit film, which has grossed over £289.5 million worldwide, where he is training the next generation of fighter pilots. The film is set for release on Friday, May 27.

He was also awarded the highest prize at the festival - the Palme d’Or award - by president Pierre Lescure and received a standing ovation from those in attendance.

The Palme d'Or is widely considered to be one of the most prestigious awards in the film industry.

Cruise is known for doing his own stunts while on set and the cast members of the upcoming film were blown away by his professionalism, with Glen Powell calling him "a machine".

Tom, who was also a producer on the film, insisted on the cast to have fighter pilot training for the movie.

But despite three months of intense training to climatise to the effects of filming inside these impressive jets, Powell - who plays trainee pilot Lieutenant Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin - admitted that the young stars struggled to fulfil that brief.

The 33-year-old told The Sun on Sunday: "There was a lot of puke during filming.

"Before shooting, Tom sent us on three months of training to get used to the G-force. [But] even with training, nothing prepares you for the intensity of flying in an F-18.

"We were all flying once a day and Tom was up there three times every day. But it didn’t faze him at all.

"There we are, all being sick into bags, and he is taking everything in his stride. The guy is a machine."

The main star and producer is believed to have banned the cast from drinking alcohol when they were filming in order to be in peak condition for the sequel, which comes 36 years after the original movie.
