Nationwide daily cases of infections with the novel coronavirus exceeded 100,000 for the first time Thursday, according to the tally compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The cumulative nationwide number exceeded 3 million the same day. It took about 5-1/2 months for the figure to rise from 1 million to 2 million, but it has only taken a further 14 days to hit the 3 million.
Tokyo confirmed 20,679 new cases of infection with the novel coronavirus, topping 20,000 for the second consecutive day.
In Osaka Prefecture, there were 19,615 new cases, surpassing 10,000 for the third day in a row. The number was 9,904 higher than last Thursday, however, 7,625 of the cases are delayed figures that Osaka City needed time to confirm.
