What is heat stroke?

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "red" alert for the northern region due to an intense heatwave affecting much of the nation. As summer temperatures rise, the risk of heat stroke—a severe and potentially fatal condition—increases. Heat stroke occurs when the body's temperature regulation fails, raising body temperature above 104°F (40°C), leading to potential damage to the brain, heart, kidneys, and muscles. Symptoms include high body temperature, chills, confusion, hot or sweaty skin, nausea, rapid breathing, and a racing heart. Heat waves, typically from March to June, cause significant physiological stress and can be deadly.
