Todd Cantwell deflects question over Rangers no-show vs Celtic

Rangers may have produced a fine 5-2 comeback against Dundee last night.

But Todd Cantwell couldn't help but look rather deflated after the club's penultimate Scottish Premiership fixture of the 2023/24 campaign.

The attacking midfielder was awarded man of the match as his cross-come-shot sailed straight into the net.

The former Norwich City man started the game with Tom Lawrence - among 11 others - out injured for Philippe Clement's team.

Cantwell didn't get any game time in the 2-1 loss to Celtic, with the flamboyant player often believing it's those kind of occasions he shines.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, he admitted that it was crucial he and his Gers teammates got three points on the board to put the loss to Celtic behind them.

While that means little for their title chances, with Celtic only a point away from another triumph, he reckons the reaction was much-needed.

"We had to," the 26-year-old said. "Obviously two sloppy goals in the first half so we needed a reaction for the fans."

Quizzed on his goal-bound, wayward cross, Cantwell added: "I'm not interested in talking about that, to be honest. Obviously, we had a disappointing result last weekend so we had to win today, that was the bottom line."

Cutting a dejected figure, he was then asked about not playing in the derby.

The importance of turning up against Dundee after the recent loss was put to him, and he sharply responded: "It's always important."

On the Dundee game, he continued: "It's difficult. They go man for man. I had a friend most of the game following me around. Listen, they are a good enough side.

"In the end, Scott's [Wright] come on. We've got so much quality with players like that who can come on with a bit of freedom and change the game for us by getting two great goals."
