Todd Boehly told he must trust instincts on major Chelsea boss Graham Potter sack decision

Todd Boehly perhaps faces the biggest decision he has had to make in his brief spell as Chelsea chairman. In the midst of a wretched run that has seen the Blues notch up just two wins in 16 matches, Boehly remains intent on giving manager Graham Potter sufficient time in turning the side’s fortunes around.

However, patience can only last so long, especially when more than £300m worth of talent was invested into the playing staff in January alone. Supporters’ ire will not help matters, with the majority now seemingly wanting change in the dugout.

With each winless game that passes, Boehly’s loyalty in the current project could start to wane. However, ex-Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has urged the owner to trust his instincts and stick with Potter if he has faith in him.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Sutton said: “It comes down to trust and belief in Potter. He was hired because of his track record with Brighton.

“If, deep down, Boehly still believes Potter is his man, then he needs to hold his nerve and back the boss. This is new territory for Boehly.

“He will know that owning a football club is not all fun and cigars and celebrating wins. The pressure is palpable.

“There may be part of Boehly which feels, if he sacks Potter, it will be a bad look on him. But if he has unwavering faith he should stick with him.”

Pressure further mounted on the board to make a switch following last Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham, which left the Blues 14 points adrift of a Champions League place. Following this latest defeat, the Telegraph reported how Boehly has issued the management with a "make or break" two games.

This consists of a clash with relegation scrappers Leeds United in the Premier League before their second-leg tie against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. The report suggested if the manager fails to win either game, it could result in his dismissal.

Jamie O'Hara, speaking on TalkSport, made a similar statement ahead of the defeat to their London rivals Spurs.
