Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has suffered a set back in his effort to follow Manchester City's multi-club model. The American is hoping to acquire stakes in clubs across the world that would allow the Blues to loan out talented youngsters and give them regular first-team minutes - aiding their development before returning to Stamford Bridge.
City’s parent company, City Football Group, which has a number of satellite clubs around the world hold stakes in the likes of New York City, Melbourne City and Girona FC. Brighton owner Tony Bloom also owns the Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise where Kaoru Mitoma, who has been outstanding for the Seagulls this season, impressed on loan at Union SG last term.
The Chelsea co-owner has spoken about a multi-club model being a way the Blues can offer a clear pathway for young talents to be exposed to first-team football. The Blues are understood to have looked at a number of clubs in France, Belgium, Portugal and South America.

Boehly has held talks with Bordeaux regarding purchasing a stake in the club, but a deal with Strasbourg is said to make more financial sense for the Blues. The size of the proposed stake Chelsea's co-owner is willing to buy is unknown, but talks are said to be progressing smoothly and it is understood the price would depend on whether Strasbourg avoid relegation from Ligue 1.
Chelsea are believed to be looking at buying a stake in the Portuguese club Portimonense as well. A report from Portuguese outlet Record has stated that Boehly has had a £34million bid to buy a 75% stake in Portimonense turned down, and now he is thinking of raising the bid whilst he also has super agent Jorge Mendes looking at other options.
