Lionel Messi has labelled Enzo Fernandez a 'spectacular player' ahead of his deadline day move to Chelsea. The Benfica star was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge last month after impressing for Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar.
football.london understands that the Blues held extensive talks with the Portuguese giants as Todd Boehly looks to land the club's primary target. Chelsea submitted a bid in excess of the £105million release clause in the 22-year-old's contract.
But, the west Londoners have proposed that the fee would be spread out over instalments rather than being paid in full. Fernandez is keen to join and it's understood he's informed Benfica that he wants to leave.

The Argentine duo both played keys role in lifting the World Cup for their country. And, the Paris Saint-Germain star has been a long admirer of the Benfica wonderkid.
Upon Fernandez's move to the Eagles from River Plate in 2021, Messi said: "I’m not surprised by Enzo. I know him and I see him train every day. He deserves it because he’s a spectacular player."
Praise from one of the best players of all time is a credit to Fernandez's meteoric rise to superstardom. And, Chelsea fans are hoping to see the midfielder in action soon.
