Todd Boehly given 'green light' to sign £85m Wesley Fofana amid Kalidou Koulibaly Chelsea issue

Todd Boehly has been given the 'green light' by one pundit to sanction a world record £85million bid for Chelsea defensive target Wesley Fofana amid a minor Kalidou Koulibaly issue.

The Senegalese defender announced his arrival to English football in some style with his well-accomplished performance in the Blues backline for their rare 1-0 victory at Goodison Park against Everton. It was a performance that made that £34million price-tag look like an absolute bargain. His player rating on football.london read: "The Senegal international still required some guidance as he adjusts to being part of Chelsea's back three but showed a great deal of ability in denying Anthony Gordon and taking the ball forward. Played a clever pass into Ben Chilwell for the England star to win a penalty. Had to be subbed in the second period as he looked to cramp up. 7."

Despite a great debut for Edouard Mendy's international teammate, it did end on a little bit of a whimper with the former Napoli legend having to come off with what looked like a minor injury. In fact, manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed it was cramp related, so nothing serious which is a huge relief to Blues supporters ahead of the big match in gameweek 2 already on the horizon against Tottenham Hotspur.

"My belief is that it was cramp and no injury," he told club media post-match.

Ahead of the Spurs game, most of the build-up will be overshadowed by the busy week forecasted in the transfer market with progress expected to be made on Fofana and Frenkie de Jong deals respectively.

Leicester's number 3 started against Brentford on Sunday hinting that nothing is imminent yet. But Tuchel's obsession with the Frenchman has caused Boehly to go overdrive in trying to secure this deal which could eclipse the £80m Man United paid for Harry Maguire.

Some pundits and supporters would prefer the remaining parts of the budget to be spent on the attack but as Jamie Redknapp mentioned, Koulibaly and Silva's age means that the 21-year-old's addition would be most welcomed as he gave his own 'green light' for this deal.

"I thought he was excellent today, it’s a brilliant signing," Redknapp said on the 31-year-old in his post-match analysis of Everton vs Chelsea on Sky Sports. "It’s a bit like Thiago Silva, wish we’d of seen him a bit earlier in our league. He’s came in at 31, he’s got really good pace, confident. I think he’s the finished article, if they can get [Wesley] Fofana, if you can get him in now to learn from Koulibaly, to learn from Thiago Silva that’s a masterclass every week.

"That’s the reason why you need someone because of the average of that defence, you’re risking fatigue, injury, that’s certainly why they want to get someone in like Fofana."
