The University of Kentucky Legal Clinic is marking its 25th anniversary of offering legal assistance to Kentuckians who can’t afford an attorney. D’lorah Hughes is the clinic’s director. She said it’s part of the curriculum at U-K’s Rosenberg College of Law.
“Our students are third year students who have been have completed applications to receive a limited practice license. So, they are able to represent real people while receiving academic credit.”
According to a university news release, the clinic has averaged about 100 clients a year. Hughes said her aspiring lawyers focus on civil, not criminal, cases.
“So that could be anything from divorces, and name changes, to expungements, consumer issues, kind of things that run the gamut. So, we are able to take calls from the community and hopefully respond to the needs.”
Hughes said some of the students who helped out last fall stuck around, so they’ll be able to help a few more folks during the spring semester. The UK Legal Clinic will celebrate its 25th anniversary March 24th.
