Japan's daily total of new novel coronavirus infections hit a record high on Wednesday, with the day's figure exceeding 40,000, according to data being compiled by The Yomiuri Shimbun.
The previous high of 32,197 new daily cases of the coronavirus was set on Tuesday, also according to Yomiuri Shimbun figures.
Tokyo logged 7,377 new cases, in another all-time high, exceeding the 5,908 cases it saw on Aug. 13 last year.
Osaka Prefecture confirmed 6,101 new cases Wednesday, surpassing its previous record of 5,396 cases set Tuesday.
Hyogo Prefecture confirmed a record 2,514 new cases, topping its previous record of 1,644 cases reported Tuesday.
Similarly, Kyoto Prefecture saw a record 1,202 cases, breaking the previous record of 1,024 marked Tuesday.
Aichi Prefecture exceeded 2,000 cases for the second consecutive day, logging its highest figure of 2,881 cases.
