TNEA Counselling 2026: Round 3 allotment list released, over 1 lakh seats vacant; how to check allotment, direct link and what comes next

More than 1 lakh engineering seats remain vacant in Tamil Nadu after the second round of TNEA 2026 counselling, with only 41.15% of the 1,81,436 seats under academic counselling filled so far, as per media reports. The tentative allotment list for Round 3 has also been released as the TNEA 2026 counselling process moves towards its final stage.

After Round 2, a total of 1,06,778 seats remain available for the final round of counselling. The corresponding fill rate after the second round last year was higher at 46.34%, when 79,894 seats had been filled.

More than 93,000 students took part in the second round this year, resulting in 49,984 allotments. The movement was not limited to lower-scoring candidates, with 25 students having cut-off marks above 190 receiving fresh allotments in Round 2.

Final round to decide fate of vacant seats

Around 1.06 lakh students are expected to participate in the final round of TNEA counselling. However, estimates suggest that nearly 45,000 seats could still remain vacant even after the counselling process concludes.

The vacancy figure alone may not reflect the actual preferences of applicants, as students continue to compete for seats in specific colleges and engineering branches rather than accepting every available option.

The continued movement among high-scoring candidates also indicates competition for preferred institutions remains strong despite the large number of vacant seats.

Former IRS officer raises concerns over engineering colleges

Former IRS officer Dr V.K. Balamurugan highlighted the issue in a post on X, noting that Tamil Nadu has 422 engineering colleges.

"There are 422 Engineering Colleges in Tamil Nadu. Round 2 of Engineering Admission Counselling 2026 has just been completed. 167 colleges have filled less than 10% of their seats. 23 colleges have zero admissions. The situation was no different last year too," he wrote.

Balamurugan questioned how colleges with very few or no admissions could continue operating and whether they would be able to provide quality engineering education.
