Going into the Week 8 game with the Atlanta Falcons, it wasn’t clear exactly how the Tennessee Titans planned on utilizing their young quarterbacks, Will Levis and Malik Willis.
Reports suggested Levis would be the starter and primary quarterback, but head coach Mike Vrabel insisted the team would likely alternate the two.
As it turns out, the latter was indeed the plan, at least according to Vrabel after the game. However, Vrabel admitted Tennessee bailed on that approach when Willis lost a fumble on a bad snap on the opening series.
After that, Willis didn’t see the field much, but exactly how many snaps did he play? And, how did the Titans fill the voids left by the trade of Kevin Byard and injury to Roger McCreary?
We’ll take a look at those questions and much more as we go over the Titans’ snap counts from their Week 8 win over the Falcons on Sunday.
Snap counts and analysis: Offense
-After the fumble on the opening series, Willis played just one snap the rest of the game. Meanwhile, Levis played 66 out of a possible 68.
-Chris Hubbard exited with a concussion after 31 snaps. Nicholas Petit-Frere was moved to right tackle and Andre Dillard played the last 37 snaps at left tackle.
-Trevon Wesco tied a season-high with 40 snaps and Kevin Rader played a season-high 16 with Josh Whyle sidelined due to a concussion. Chig Okonkwo led all tight ends with 49 snaps.
-Derrick Henry out-snapped Tyjae Spears, 44-30.
-DeAndre Hopkins led all receivers with 43 snaps, followed by Treylon Burks (35), Nick Westbrook-Ikhine (34), Chris Moore (28) and Kyle Philips (18).
Snap counts and analysis: Defense
-Elijah Molden played every snap in the first game without Byard, as did Amani Hooker. Terrell Edmunds chipped-in with 17 snaps while K’Von Wallace and Matthew Jackson only played on special teams.
-Trevis Gipson played a season-high 17 snaps. I still think he should be getting more, but that’s a start considering his previous season-high was nine.
-Eric Garror played a whopping 62 snaps and served as the nickel corner in the absence of McCreary. He also worked as the team’s punt returner.
-Monty Rice played a single defensive snap. He now has six on the year, including the five he played in Week 3.
