The NFL trade deadline is on Tuesday and many believe that the Tennessee Titans will be front and center in the festivities that day. That wouldn’t surprise anyone, and after trading DeAndre Hopkins and Ernest Jones during Week 8, many expected the fire sale to continue in Week 9.
One former NFL general manager believes the Titans will be busy and the players involved might surprise. CBS Sports reporter Shanna McCarrison states in her piece that Rick Spielman proposed six trades that should happen before the deadline.
The Titans show up twice in the article with the first trade proposal impacting the defensive line. In his opinion, the San Francisco 49ers would trade for defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day.
With Javon Hargrave out with a bicep injury and the 49ers struggling against the run, the team could use a defensive tackle to help cover the loss. Spielman would try to trade for Titans defensive tackle Sebastian Joseph-Day, who would fit San Francisco’s scheme.
Joseph-Day has been solid for the Titans in 2024 with 19 total tackles and two sacks, and while he would be missed, he may not be in the long-term plans of the franchise. With general manager Ran Carthons’ familiarity with the 49ers, this potential trade proposal makes some sense.
However, the next time the Titans show up in this piece is a bit more of a head scratcher. Spielman makes the case that the Titans should trade for Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young.
If Young is put in the right situation, he may be able to thrive more than he has with the Carolina Panthers. The Titans need to estimate where they expect to fall in this year’s draft, along with what quarterbacks could be available when they’re on the clock, to determine if selecting a signal-caller would be better than trading for one.
That take is interesting and does have some merit in theory, but the biggest problem is Young as the target. It’s no secret that Young has not lived up to the hype in Carolina, but with neither Will Levis nor Mason Rudolph finding success, would the results be any better? Probably not.
Spielman stated he wouldn’t break the bank, offering up no more than a fourth round selection, but that is still a bit rich for an unproven player who has struggled since entering the league.
