Anyone who follows this site knows how much I wanted the Tennessee Titans to sign Allen Robinson as a replacement for Julio Jones, but the Los Angeles Rams ripped my heart out by inking him to a three-year deal.
But, there is a way the Rams can make it up to me: trade Robert Woods or Van Jefferson to the Titans.
Our friends over at Rams Wire speculated that either could be dealt after the Robinson signing, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter named Woods as someone to watch for in a potential deal, and he notes the Rams are already receiving calls.
With Robinson on the roster, and with the apparently still possible re-signing of Odell Beckham Jr., Woods and Jefferson, both of whom would be upgrades for Tennessee, might become expendable.
As of right now, Jefferson is the more attractive of the two. He’s coming off a career year with 50 catches for 802 yards and six scores, he’s still on a rookie deal, making him inexpensive, and he could be a long-term solution for Tennessee at the position.
Jefferson can assume an outside role, work out of the slot, and he’s capable of taking the top off a defense. The only problem is Jefferson, 25, is still very young and cheap, thus the Rams will be less willing to deal him.
Still, I can dream.
Woods is more proven and a more realistic option to trade for, but he also comes with more risk. He suffered a torn ACL in 2021, so there’s no telling what shape he’ll be in during his first year back.
However, as we’ve seen in the past, general manager Jon Robinson is not afraid to take chances on injured players, so don’t rule it out.
When at his best, Woods is a reliable target with great hands who can move the chains and work from all over the field. He can rip off big chunks of yardage after the catch and would be a consistent option in the short-to-intermediate range.
As far as his contract is concerned, Woods doesn’t come with a ton of risk financially, as Tennessee could cut and run from the remaining years of his deal in 2023 if things don’t work out.
Numbers to know if the #Titans traded for Robert Woods:
– 4yrs left
– 2022 Cap Hit: $13.5m
– 2023 Cap Hit: $13.75m
– 2024 Cap Hit: $15.75m
– 2025 Cap Hit: $17.5m
– Restructure 2022: up to $9.285m in savings
– Potential Out, No Restructure: 2023 season $0 dead cap— Football & Other F Words (@FWordsPod) March 18, 2022
Is he the big name Titans fans are yearning for? No, but the options for the Titans in free agency are dwindling, which means Robinson has to get creative and look at trades, which I’m sure he already has.
Give me Woods or Jefferson, with the latter being the preference.
