Most mock drafts we’ve seen this offseason have the Tennessee Titans taking a wide receiver, tight end, edge rusher, offensive lineman and even an inside linebacker, but a recent one from CBS Sports has the Titans going in a different direction.
In the latest mock draft from CBS Sports’ Ryan Wilson, the Titans select Ole Miss quarterback Matt Corral with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Here are Wilson’s thoughts on the pick:
“Pretty sure this is the first time in 27 mock drafts that we’ve had a QB going to the Titans. That’s mostly because the offensive line is priority No. 1, and partly due to Ryan Tannehill being pretty good at times. Things hit a rough patch down the stretch, and the Bengals playoff loss was a huge exclamation point. So if Corral is here, Tennessee could give it some thought.”
This is actually the second CBS Sports mock draft that has the Titans taking a quarterback, as the outlet’s Josh Edwards had Tennessee taking Liberty’s Malik Willis back in January.
We also mocked a quarterback to the Titans back in February in what was our first mock draft. The choice was Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett, although it seems very unlikely at this point that he’ll be on the board in that spot.
It certainly isn’t crazy to think the Titans could target a quarterback in April’s draft after the debacle that was Ryan Tannehill’s performance in the divisional round loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Whether or not they target one this early remains to be seen, though. Adding to that, this isn’t considered a strong class of quarterbacks, so it’s very possible Tennessee will avoid one altogether.
Regardless, Corral is no doubt an intriguing prospect and one the Titans should consider if he’s on the board at No. 26 overall.
The 6-foot-1, 205-pound signal-caller has the kind of elite athleticism teams are looking for in this day and age, but he also looks to make plays from the pocket, possesses sufficient arm strength, and his accuracy has improved greatly over the years.
Corral will need time to develop, but with Tannehill likely to be under center in 2022 anyway, the 23-year-old can take the time he needs.
