Tennessee Titans 2021 first-round pick and cornerback Caleb Farley had a rough rookie season, but as general manager Jon Robinson stated in February, the team is looking for more out of him in 2022.
Farley failed to grab a starting role out of training camp last year, which led to Janoris Jenkins manning the spot opposite Kristian Fulton in 2021.
The Virginia Tech product did make one start but played sparingly overall over three games. He then saw his season end early due to a torn ACL suffered in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills.
At the owner’s meetings last month, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel noted that Farley looks like he is “rehabbing hard” and said that he “looks good” and “looks stronger” so far, per Jim Wyatt of Titans Online.
“He looks like he has been rehabbing hard and doing what he has been asked to do,” Vrabel said. “I like his consistency. He looks good, and he certainly looks stronger when I see him in the training room.”
Robinson revealed that Farley has added some mass to his upper body and is pleased with how things are coming along.
“He has really worked hard,” Robinson said of Farley. “He has been in there a lot working, rehabbing. He is changing his body. He is a taller corner, and he has added some mass to his upper body. He has done a nice job.”
The Titans can only hope that Farley makes the kind of second-year leap fellow Fulton did in 2021.
However, the team must have an insurance policy in place just in case Farley gets hurt again or doesn’t perform at a high enough level in his first season back from such a serious injury.
With Jenkins gone, veteran corner Buster Skrine and/or 2020 seventh-round pick, defensive back Chris Jackson, figure to be the backup plans, but neither presents an appealing option if called upon for a starting role.
Hopefully Farley makes the leap the Titans are hoping for and stays healthy so it doesn’t come to that.
