The Tennessee Titans will be in the market for multiple wide receivers this offseason after the position group was among the worst in the NFL in 2022.
One of the top pending free-agent options set to hit the market at the position is Green Bay Packers wideout, Allen Lazard, who is coming off a career-best year after tallying career-highs in receptions (60) and yards (788).
In a recent article naming the best fits for each of the top available wideouts, Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon tabbed the Titans as a potential landing spot for Lazard in free agency.
While he’s a decent pass-catcher, the Iowa State product is also a standout blocker. That has helped him play 73-plus percent of snaps for the Green Bay Packers in each of the last three seasons.
Lazard might prefer to stay in Green Bay this offseason regardless of what veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers decides to do. If not, the run-oriented Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens should be interested in adding him.
Tennessee just released veteran wideout Robert Woods, so it might prefer to land a shifty and/or slot receiver. Considering how heavily the Titans lean on All-Pro running back Derrick Henry, though, Lazard would be a great system fit next to promising second-year wideout Treylon Burks.
While Lazard did post career-best numbers, his season was a disappointment overall, as he didn’t post the No. 1 receiver totals many expected him to after becoming the top dog in Green Bay. He also missed two games.
Putting that aside for now, Lazard would be a solid fit with the Titans for a few reasons.
As Kenyon mentioned, Lazard is a very good blocker, which has always been a point of emphasis under head coach Mike Vrabel. Also, Lazard would add a much-needed veteran element to Tennessee’s young corps., along with size.
While that’s all well and good, the price will have to be right for the cash-strapped Titans to even consider the 27-year-old, who has only played in every game of a season once in his career.
Spotrac estimates that Lazard will receive a three-year, $37.5 million deal, which works out to $12.5 million annually.
That’s actually a reasonable price for a No. 2 receiver like Lazard, although it’s possible he gets more than that given the weak market and his status as the top option on it.
I do like Lazard and think he’d be a good fit in Tennessee to pair with Treylon Burks, but he’s not the kind of player the Titans should be overpaying for.
Tennessee doesn’t have a ton of cap space to work with, but it’s important to remember that the team can push money of players signed this offseason to future years when they have more room to work with, like in 2024.
