Titans defeat Commanders 21-17 as late rally falls short

The Tennessee Titans defeated the Washington Commanders 21-17 Sunday in Week 5 action from FedEx Field. Washington had a chance to win the game late when wide receiver Terry McLaurin drew a pass interference in the end zone, giving Washington a first and goal from the two-yard line.

However, quarterback Carson Wentz found no one open on the first two plays and on third down tried to squeeze the ball to running back J.D. McKissic and was intercepted by linebacker David Long to end the game for the Commanders.

Washington falls to 1-4 on the season and has now lost four consecutive games.

Wentz was terrific for most of the game, finishing 25 of 38 for 359 yards with two touchdowns, however, his biggest mistake came at the most critical time, which defines his career.

Washington began the final drive on its own 11-yard line as Wentz methodically moved the Commanders down the field, finding Terry McLaurin and Curtis Samuel at different times for first downs. The Commanders used their final timeout when Wentz, avoiding a sack, pitched to McKissic for a short gain with 28 seconds remaining.

The lack of timeouts meant Washington couldn’t attempt to run the ball once it had first and goal. The Commanders only ran for 43 yards on the day, but it wasn’t necessary as Washington was moving with the passing game.

Rookie wide receiver Dyami Brown caught two passes for 105 yards — both touchdowns. They were the first two touchdowns of his NFL career. Brown, playing in place of the injured Jahan Dotson, took advantage of his opportunities.

Washington’s defense sacked Tennessee quarterback Ryan Tannehill five times, with defensive end Montez Sweat leading the way with two sacks. Unfortunately for the Commanders, they weren’t able to force a turnover.

The Titans were led by star running back Derrick Henry, who carried the football 28 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 30 yards.

Now, Washington has a short week to prepare for a trip to Chicago to face the Bears on Thursday Night Football.
