Tina Turner admitted she put herself in 'great danger' in post weeks before her death

Tina Turner urged her followers to "show their kidneys love" in one of her last posts on social media prior to her death, following her experience with her health in the past.

It was announced this evening that the singer – best known for songs like Proud Mary and The Best – had died "peacefully", aged 83, at her home in Switzerland today.

The news has prompted an outpouring of tributes about Tina, whose decades-long career saw her win numerous Grammy Awards and be the subject of a biopic.

More recently, her life was adapted into a jukebox musical – featuring a number of her songs – which debuted at the Aldwych Theatre in London's West End in 2018.

In one of her last posts on Instagram, Tina - who is understood to have had a kidney transplant years ago - marked International World Kidney Day in March.

She wrote: "Today is International World Kidney Day. Why is it important? Because kidneys fail without pain. And that's why I'm telling you today: Show your kidneys love! They deserve it.

"My kidneys are victims of my not realising that my high blood pressure should have been treated with conventional medicine. I have put myself in great danger by refusing to face the reality that I need daily, lifelong therapy with medication.

"For far too long I believed that my body was an untouchable and indestructible bastion. I am therefore delighted to be able to support a new international campaign for kidney health.

"You can read the whole story of my disease on the website www.showyourkidneyslove.com. Here you can find out how your kidneys work, what the risk factors are and how you can keep these important organs healthy. Let’s show our kidneys some love!"

In her final post on the social media platform, Tina shared her pride over the acclaimed musical that is part of her legacy in her last post on social media prior to her death.

The show celebrated its fifth anniversary a few weeks ago, with Tina having shared her pride over it in what would become her last post on Instagram prior to her death.

Alongside a video about the musical's evolution, she wrote five weeks ago: "Sending so much love to @tinathemusical. Proud of our wonderful show and thrilled that we're celebrating five years in the West End - long may it continue".

The last post on her Facebook page, shared earlier this month, also celebrated the show's anniversary. Alongside a compilation video, it read: "Celebrating 5 years of [Tina] in the West End!"

Tina was able to witness the show receiving much success since its debut five years ago, including it winning an Laurence Olivier Award and a Tony Award.

A statement was shared on her Instagram account tonight alongside a photo of Tina paid tribute to the Queen of Rock 'n' Roll. The caption read: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner."

The caption continued: "With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow.

"Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly".
