Time 100 most influential 2023: King Charles, Pedro Pascal and Elden Ring creator make the list

Time has released its list of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2023.

Every year, Time produces a list celebrating the 100 people who in the editors' judgement had the greatest influence on the course of the year. Each entry is accompanied with a written tribute, frequently written by a respected contemporary.

Time 100 alumni and the magazine’s international writing staff submit suggestions for the influential people that make up the magazine’s final list, which is then picked by Time editors. The list, which was first published in 1999 as a result of discussion among American academics, politicians and journalists, is now an annual occasion that receives a lot of media attention.

Here are some of the names that made it into the list this year. The full list can be found here.

King Charles

British Vogue’s editor, Edward Enninful, who became the global ambassador of the Prince’s Trust put forward King Charles as “his love for the environment is well documented”.

The Prince’s Trust, founded in 1976 by Prince Charles, to help vulnerable young people get their lives on track “began to put our friends and family into steady employment, its outreach programmes inspired many of us and instilled confidence. I didn’t realize then just how close our new King was to all of this.” said Enninful.

With almost 1,000,000 young people supported to change their lives, 125,000 entrepreneurs supported, and 395,000 people in the UK provided with business support, the Prince's Trust is one of the most  successful funding organisations in the UK and the country's leading youth charity.

Bella Hadid

Bella Hadid says she has lost friends as a result of her support for the Palestinian cause (Yasmine Diba)

Put forward by fashion model Christy Turlington Burns, Bella Hadid has made the list of Time’s most influental as a pioneer.

Burns said: “In a moment like now, when an industry is struggling to stay culturally relevant and inclusive, putting a single name and face to it would be near impossible. If anyone comes close, it’s Bella Hadid.”

The model has never been afraid to speak out for any cause that is important to her, whether it is Black Lives Matter or the Ukrainian war. However, the topic that seems to be closest to her heart is Palestinian human rights. She has used her position to raise awareness of the atrocities and tragedies that various underprivileged communities experience.

Hadid has previously claimed that she lost work contracts and friends because of her support of the Palestinian cause.

“There have been so many brands that have stopped working with me," the supermodel spoke candidly about her advocacy on the podcast of Libyan-American journalist Noor Tagouri. “A lot of friends have also turned their backs on me,” she added.

Pedro Pascal

Emmy-winning actor Sarah Paulson said Pedro Pascal’s “interior light burns so bright, it’s simply taken some time for your eyes to adjust. But now that you’ve seen him, you know too. He’s the whole motherf-cking deal.”

The Ocean’s Eight star previously went on to explain what she believes is Pascal’s “je ne sais quoi”, explaining that there is something about him that makes you “want him to succeed” and that she helped Pascal financially while he was struggling to land acting roles in the past.

Well, it’s definitely paid off. Pascal has entered the entertainment industry enjoying fame and near-universal adulation thanks to years of grinding away with movies including The Last of Us and The Mandalorian.

Hidetaka Miyazaki

The Elden Ring creator’s game makes players “feel accomplished and smart” (FromSoftware)

Elden Ring creator Hidetaka Miyazaki is only the second video game creator to be chosen for the prestigious list, following Time's 2007 selection of Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, as reported by VGC.

Neil Druckmann of video game company Naughty Dog wrote the tribute for Miyazaki, praising the game designer's challenging yet rewarding approach to game making.

“Miyazaki’s games make the player feel accomplished and smart – and it’s all thanks to his and his team’s uncompromising approach. He refuses to overexplain the mechanics or the lore, but rather puts his trust in the player to figure it out on their own.”

MrBeast

Jimmy Donaldson, known online by the handle MrBeast, has taken YouTube by storm.

With 140 million subscribers, MrBeast creates content for charity work and has recreated Squid Game in real life and paid for the eye surgeries of 1,000 blind people.

YouTuber and former Nasa engineer Mark Rober has praised the YouTuber, saying: “The best engineers I knew at Nasa were the ones who could break a complex problem down to first principles. They could strip away the noise, reduce a problem to its essence and find the solution. Jimmy Donaldson – known online by the handle MrBeast – is able to do that too.”
