Timberwolves Star Anthony Edwards Out Indefinitely With Ankle Injury

Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards will not play in Minnesota’s game against the Raptors on Saturday and is in jeopardy of missing more time after spraining his ankle in the team’s Friday double-overtime loss to the Bulls.

Minnesota head coach Chris Finch told reporters Saturday that Edwards is still in his protective boot and that he is not aware of how long the 2023 All-Star will remain away from the court.

The 21-year-old sprained his ankle late in first quarter of the game Friday in Chicago. Edwards drove to the right wing where he was trapped by Alex Caruso and Nikola Vucevic. As he noticed the trap, Edwards made a cross-court pass to Mike Conley, who notched a three-pointer.

However, Edwards jumped to make the pass to Conley and landed awkwardly on his right ankle, immediately yelling out in pain. He was unable to put pressure on his right leg and was helped to the locker room by a Minnesota staff member as well as Karl-Anthony Towns.

Edwards was ruled out of Friday’s game in the third quarter. The Timberwolves (35–36) lost the road contest, 139–131, and now sit at No. 8 in the Western Conference.

Edwards is averaging 25 points, six rebounds and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 46% from the floor and 36.9% from three-point range this season. With Edwards sidelined for now, it hinders Minnesota’s chances of moving up the standings to earn a top six playoff spot and avoid playing in the NBA’s play-in tournament.

The Timberwolves, who have won just four of their last 10 games, currently sit one game behind the No. 6-seed Mavericks with 11 games to play.
