Tim Paine opens up on Head-Langer disagreement, says change led to big shift in output

NEW DELHI: Travis Head's batting approach faced contrasting views, with former coach Justin Langer emphasising defensive play, which restricted the left-hander's natural attacking style that has now yielded remarkable results.

Head's brilliant 140 helped Australia secure a commanding 10-wicket victory against India in the second Test, bringing the five-match series to 1-1.

"I don't think either of them will mind me saying this, but he and JL used to have a real difference of opinion," Paine said on 'SEN Cricket'.

"You've got Test greats in commentary and you've got a Test great (Langer) that's coaching and Graeme Hick at the time who'd scored 101 First Class hundreds as his batting coach (offering advice)."

As a young Test player aiming to maintain his position, Head attempted to accommodate various suggestions, including focusing on defensive techniques, despite his personal preferences.

The 30-year-old has flourished after being permitted to embrace his natural style, both during Langer's final period and under the current leadership of Andrew McDonald and Pat Cummins.

Paine believes Head's recent success stems from his authentic approach to batting. Despite potential failures and lean periods, his aggressive style and shot-making ability have established him as a match-winner across all formats.

His Adelaide performance earned his eighth player-of-the-match award in 51 Tests. His significant contributions in crucial matches include recognition in both the WTC final and World Cup final last year.

According to Paine, Head's steadfast belief in his methods, despite early career criticism, demonstrates his excellence.

"Travis Head, in modern-day cricket where batters are analysed to within an inch of their life, he is a great example of finding a way that works for you and just sticking to it," Paine said.

Head's distinctive technique, whilst occasionally questioned by commentators, reflects his commitment to his personal style, disregarding external opinions about his methods.

"It is amazing to watch a guy just at the peak of his powers at the moment," Paine concluded.
