Tiger Woods has confirmed he will miss next week's US Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts after revealing his 'body needs more time to get stronger'. Woods' decision to pull out comes just weeks after he was forced to withdraw from the final round of the PGA Championship in May.
The 15-time major champion was making only his second outing on the PGA Tour since suffering severe injuries in a high-speed car accident in February 2021. His initial return came one month prior to his outing at Southern Hills, after making a fairytale comeback at April's Masters at Augusta, the course in which he has claimed five green jackets.
Woods - who has won three US Open titles during his remarkable career - revealed his decision to withdraw via a statement on his official Twitter account.
Woods wrote: "I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the @usopengolf as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf." The American has previously reiterated that the rest of his career on the PGA Tour will be a part-time one due to the effects of his injuries.
The only four events penned in on the 46-year-old's calendar were the sport's four major championships, the Masters and PGA Championship - in which he has already competed in - as well as the US Open and the Open Championship next month. Despite missing his home Open, the American revealed in his statement that he still hopes to be at St Andrews in July, as well as the JP McManus Pro-Am in Ireland.
He added: "I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at @JPProAm and at @TheOpen next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!" Like his comeback at Augusta, a return to the Old Course next month would be a fairytale one for Woods, having won two of his three Claret Jugs at the iconic setting.
Speaking about returning to his 'favourite golf course in the world' at April's Masters he told Sky Sports: "I am looking forward to St Andrews. That is something that is near and dear to my heart, and I've won two Opens there. It's the Home of Golf and it's my favourite golf course in the world, so I will be there for that one, but anything in between that, I don't know.”
