Tierney recall, Fabio Vieira debut and Marquinhos promotion - Arsenal changes vs Bournemouth

Four goals, a great home debut for Gabriel Jesus and an electric atmosphere inside the Emirates Stadium were just some of the positives to come out of Arsenal's 4-2 win against Leicester City.

But as with any game, the Gunners weren't perfect from start to finish. There were some negatives that manager Mikel Arteta will want to iron out before Saturday's trip to the South Coast to face newly-promoted Bournemouth as his side look to maintain their 100% winning record at the start of the Premier League season.

After taking a 2-0 lead thanks to Gabriel Jesus' brace, Arsenal survived a scare just before half-time when VAR intervened to overturn the decision to award the visitors a penalty as replays showed the on-rushing Aaron Ramsdale made minimal contact with Jamie Vardy in the area.

Although there was to be no clean sheet for the Gunners keeper as William Saliba put through his own net early in the second half and Ramsdale wouldn't have been too pleased with James Maddison's goal which made it 3-2 as the ball slipped through his legs from a tight angle.

Taking to social media to acknowledge his mistake, the 24-year-old made sure to thank the attacking players for ensuring his error wasn't costly in the end: "Sometimes mistakes happen but I’m super proud of the boys digging us out today!" he wrote on Instagram. "Enjoy the weekend."

Whilst Ramsdale didn't have the best game of his career, it would be a massive surprise if he doesn't keep his place against his former club this weekend, but the question is will the Arsenal manager opt to freshen things up after naming an unchanged side for the first two games of the season?

Well, the Spaniard should have the luxury of doing so as the only confirmed injury absentee at the moment is Reiss Nelson, as a result, football.london takes a look at four changes Arteta could make to either his starting XI or 20-man matchday squad as Arsenal face Bournemouth on Saturday.

Tomiyasu and Tierney return

Arsenal have started this season without last season's first-choice full-back pairing and the best compliment anyone can pay Ben White and Oleksandr Zinchenko is that Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney haven't been sorely missed which has allowed Arteta to not take any risks.

However, White did appear to have picked up a knock before being replaced by Tomiyasu against Leicester. Whilst it should be noted that no injury has been confirmed and the change could have been pre-planned, this could be the perfect time to get more minutes into the Japan international's legs after a long injury layoff.

Meanwhile, on the opposite flank, it does feel like it's just a matter of time before Tierney reclaims the left-back spot from Zinchenko following two substitute appearances where has looked a lot more solid defensively than the Ukraine international.

Of course, given the summer signing's versatility, if he does make way for Tierney it doesn't mean he will drop out of the starting line-up altogether as he could push into midfield and start ahead of Granit Xhaka as one of two No.8s alongside Martin Odegaard, but in truth, that appears unlikely at the moment.

Fabio Vieira included

During Arteta's pre-match press conference last Friday he revealed that 'some' of his previously injured players would make the matchday squad against Leicester. The trio in question was Tomiyasu, Emile Smith Rowe and Fabio Vieira - with the latter the sole absentee as things turned out.

The good news is that the summer signing has been in full training of late as it appears he has recovered from the foot injury that has hampered his settling-in period and he could be in line to make the matchday squad against Bournemouth after being name-dropped as an alternative to Xhaka.

"It's to play the role that we want," Arteta told reporters when asked how important the Switzerland international is to Arsenal's attack when he plays in more of an advanced role in central midfield. "Granit has certain characteristics, and we can develop other characteristics because he has the ability to do it.

"When Fabio Vieira plays in that position, he'll have a different role because his qualities are different and Martin's as well. The team has to adapt, but the players as well have to have an eye for goal if they're playing there and the feeling that 'I want to score.'"

Having not featured for Arsenal across pre-season, the lack of match sharpness means he would likely have to settle for a place on the bench if called up for the game at the Vitality Stadium where he would inch even closer to making his official debut - two months and four days after completing his £30million transfer from Porto.

Marquinhos promotion

For the second straight week, Marquinhos was impressive for Arsenal's Under-21s. After netting a goal and assist on his debut against Manchester United, he followed that up with a brace in a 3-2 win over West Ham United last time out and he might be giving Arteta some food for thought with regards to a promotion to the senior squad at the weekend.

But with the Under-21s back in action on Saturday afternoon against Chelsea nonetheless, the plan for Marquinhos will be a lot clearer come that morning. If he features against the Blues, that will certainly rule him out of making the senior matchday squad a few hours later against Bournemouth.
