A Nottinghamshire car manufacturer that creates and distributes customised cars is doubling its site. Great British Sports Cars, based in Ollerton, is a leading business in the British sports car industry and has recently purchased its current premises and the adjoining site in order to expand the business further.
Despite the cost of living crisis, this business is thriving and continues to design and build its cars completely in house, creating around 80% of the entire car at its Nottinghamshire site. The few parts they do not make themselves include the engine as well as the gearbox, wheels, tyres and the nuts and bolts.
Director of the company, Richard Hall, said: "At the moment we have this building here and over the road, but we are buying the other half of this building which will give us the extra space, so we will be doubling the space. We are pretty unique in the industry in that we make everything, none of our competitors do what we do."

At the moment the site produces around 60 cars each year, which can range from £15,000 to £35,000 for self assembly, and upwards of £35,000 for a finished car depending on the specifications and level of customisation a customer wants. Regarding the self assembly cars, Richard said: "We get lots of people who have always wanted to make their own car, so we get a lot of father and son projects from doing that."
The additional space on the site will allow the business to take on new employees, increase the number of cars it can produce, and offer stability to its customers and members of staff. As the business designs the customers dream car using computer assisted design, it then gets to create the car from scratch and they "regularly send customers photos so that they can see it progress" from a plain chassis to the finished product.
Richard explained that people are still buying sports cars, despite the current economic situation. He said: "We have not noticed it yet, it's not really had an impact. The electric has gone up and some raw materials have gone up a little bit, but that's a small part of it and has not really had an effect."
The business mainly creates cars for customers in Europe, but over the years they have shipped cars to customers across to North America and South America, and one car was sent to Kazakhstan. In addition to creating sports cars and the day to day work, the business is also working on a project with the company Vertical Aerospace.
Richard said: "We will also be doing some aerospace work. We are working on a fully electric aircraft."
