Three young children and adult injured in horror M66 crash as air ambulance lands

Three young children were among those injured after a serious car crash earlier today which closed a major road.

A section of the M66 near Heywood, Greater Manchester, was shut at around 5pm as two air ambulances, fire crews, paramedics and police arrived on the scene.

Three children of unknown ages and an adult were injured in the crash. Their current condition is currently unknown, Manchester Evening News reports.

Drivers have been urged to stay away from the area as the motorway is expected to remain closed for some time.

Eyewitnesses have described seeing two air ambulances, multiple police cars, three fire engines and multiple paramedics from the North West Ambulance Service.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "A serious road traffic collision involving four vehicles has completely closed the M66 in both directions between junctions 3 and 4.

"Police, ambulance crews, the air ambulance, and firefighters are working together to help three children and one adult who have been injured.

“The motorway will remain closed while we work so please avoid the area and use alternate routes.”

Pictures from the scene show miles of tailbacks on the southbound side of the motorway, with drivers seen getting out of their cars as traffic came to a standstill.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
