Three-year-old dies after allegedly being left in hot car in Sydney's south-west

A three-year-old boy has died after allegedly being left in a hot car in Sydney's south-west.

Police say the incident happened on Railway Parade at Glenfield, with officers called to the car about 3pm after reports that a child was unresponsive.

Paramedics attended but the child died at the scene.

"Officers from Campbelltown City Police Area Command were told the child had been in the vehicle throughout the day," police said in a statement.

"The vehicle's owner, a man known to the child, raised the alarm when he returned to the car."

He has been taken to Campbelltown Police Station where he is assisting police.

The ABC understands the man is the child's father.

Footage from the incident shows police tape cordoning off an area on the busy street at the front of shops including a grocery store and a bottle shop.

A distraught man can also be seen sitting on the ground covering his face surrounded by a group of people.

A local told the ABC it was an absolute tragedy that should never have happened.

"When I had my boy I was quite paranoid about him getting locked-up and I used to double and triple check, so it's unfortunate it's happened.

"As a father I feel absolutely devastated, I'm gutted."

Police have set up a crime scene where investigations are underway.

Sydney has been sweltering, with 34 degrees Celsius recorded in the Glenfield area on Thursday.
