Three things we learned as Hibs run riot in Premier Sports Cup opener vs Clyde

Lee Johnson made the perfect start to life as Hibernian manager as his side put on a stunning show in front of the home support at Easter Road.

The Hibees raced into a 5-0 goal lead inside the opening 40 minutes of their first competitive game under the new boss against Scottish League One outfit Clyde. It was the perfect start to the Premier Sports Cup campaign and will get the confidence flying ahead of the rest of the group games and the Premiership opener at the end of the month.

It's been a busy summer in the capital with Johnson adding a host of new faces as he bids to transform the fortunes of last season after the capital club finished in the bottom half of the Premiership table. But the Hibs fans will be full of optimism ahead of the new campaign after a thumping win in their first clash in Group D.

Here are three things we spotted as the new fixture calendar for the 2022/23 campaign officially gets underway.

Goals galore

Lee Johnson's men treated the Hibees faithful to five first half goals in the Edinburgh sunshine.

It is a real statement of intent and something that will get the fans excited for more.

The perfect home debut start for the new boss.

Second chance?

Christian Doidge has been linked with a move to Dundee United with former boss Jack Ross.

But on today's showing, Hibs will be determined to keep him around for the season ahead.

A hat-trick inside the opening 30 minutes will hand the big striker a huge confidence boost and give his new boss something to think about with Kevin Nisbet still sidelined.

His treble beats his tally for the WHOLE of last season after just two goals from his 25 appearances in all competitions.

A rebirth under Lee Johnson? One to keep an eye on.

Debut watch

David Marshall and Nohan Kenneh earned first starts at Easter Road.

Former Celtic and Scotland keeper Marshall was also named captain for the thumping win.

A quiet afternoon for the 37-year-old who watched on as his new side romped to victory.

Aiden McGeady, Kyle McClelland and Lewis Miller were handed spots on the bench and all got a first taste of life as a Hibs player.

Former Rangers stopper McClelland was introduced at half-time for Rocky Bushiri after impressing in pre-season while McGeady and Miller got 30 minutes as part of a triple substitution on the hour.

Johnson was without Momodou Bojang, Èlie Youan and Jair Tavares as they are waiting for work permit approval.
