Three things to do today as energy prices begin to soar

Many households in the UK will see their energy bills increase as the new energy price guarantee comes into place.

The government have announced that they are introducing a cap on the unit price for energy, but many people will still see a substantial rise.

Although most energy saving tips will not save enough to offset the total impact of the rising cost of living, here are some ways to help minimise costs.

1. Keep tabs on your meter readings

Without your readings, suppliers estimate usage, which could mean that your bills become higher. People are encouraged to take regular meter readings and to contact to give them over the phone or online.

Energy UK have advised customers to check with their supplier for advice on giving readings when the new prices set in.

2. Claim what you are entitled to

You should be making sure you are claiming all the support you are entitled to this winter.

Every households will get a one off £400 rebate to their fuel bills from October, the discount will be made automatically by energy suppliers in England, Scotland and Wales and will require no action on your behalf.

Additionally, people can use the Citizens Advice benefits calculator to see if there are any funds you should be claiming.

Those claiming support such as income-based jobseeker's allowance, income support, pension credit or universal credit, will have certain schemes in place to help pay energy charges and energy debt directly from their benefits.

3. Contact your energy supplier if you are struggling

If you cannot afford your energy bills, contact your supplier as you may be able to get a grant to help pay it.

While there is no need to contact suppliers to receive the Government support packages, people’s energy suppliers should still remain the first port of call if they are struggling with bills. Suppliers offer a range of support, such as repayment plans, and can help to signpost to the best sources of independent advice for your needs.

Other points of support include Citizens Advice and your local council. The charity anticipates that almost half a million people could be in this position over the winter.
