Three things spotted in Manchester United training ahead of Charlton Athletic clash including captaincy hint

Manchester United will switch their attention to the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night when they host League One's Charlton Athletic.

United enjoyed a positive outing in the FA Cup on Friday night thanks to a 3-1 victory over Everton. Erik ten Hag opted to field a strong side at the weekend and despite the visitors being in the third tier, it is expected that the Dutch manager will select several first team squad players.

The winner of the midweek clash will progress to the semi-finals of the League Cup where a two-legged tie awaits. Ahead of tomorrow's match, MEN Sport has taken a look at the United training and here is what we spotted.

Trio of youngsters feature prominently

While Ten Hag will be keen to progress in the Carabao Cup, Tuesday night still provides an opportunity for youngsters to impress. Three young players, in particular, featured prominently and could be given their chance.

Facundo Pellistri has still not been given a chance at United despite featuring at the World Cup with Uruguay and Ten Hag may see Charlton as ideal opposition for him. Centre-back Di'Shon Bernard was put through his paces at Carrington as well as forward Kobbie Mainoo who has been causing a lot of excitement in the United academy.

Potential centre-back pairing

United currently have a lot of options to feature at centre-back. Against Everton, Ten Hag opted to start with Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw in the heart of the defence.

However, both Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire were spotted in training while Varane was not seen. Playing Martinez and Maguire would make sense as both players have struggled for first-team minutes since the World Cup and would provide plenty of experience against their lower league opposition.

Casemiro showing leadership qualities

Prior to the World Cup, Ten Hag explained that he overlooked Casemiro for the captain role in the absence of Maguire and Bruno Fernandes because of the language barrier. But, despite this, the ex-Real Madrid man was at the forefront in the training drills dishing out instructions to younger members of the team.

Fernandes will not be featuring against Charlton in midweek through suspension and should Maguire not play, the Dutch manager will have a decision to make on who takes the captain's armband. Casemiro proved in training that he is capable of that responsibility if needed.
