Three people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash on the A1 in Northumberland.
Emergency crews attended the scene from approximately 9.20am on Wednesday (December 14) on the A1 in the southbound direction following reports of a collision involving three vehicles near Stannington.
The section of the A1 southbound between Stannington and the Seaton Burn was subsequently closed while and a diversion was put in place.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly before 9.30am today (Wednesday), we received a report of a collision on the A1 near Stannington, southbound.
“A section of the A1 southbound is closed and a diversion is in place. Motorists are asked to use an alternate route if possible while the vehicles are recovered and the road cleared.”
The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) later confirmed that three people had been taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital for further treatment.
A NEAS spokesman added: "We received a call at 9.20am this morning to reports of a multi-vehicle road traffic incident on the A1 southbound near Shotton, Northumberland.
"We dispatched three ambulance crews and one rapid response paramedic. Three patients were taken to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital (NSECH) for further treatment."
The A1 southbound re-opened to drivers once again at approximately 12pm - almost three hours after the crash.
