A 30-year-old woman in eastern Uganda carried a baby girl for 30 weeks while an abnormal, grape-like mass of placental tissue grew beside her in the same womb, according to a case report published Sept. 26, 2026, in the International Medical Case Reports Journal. The baby weighed 1.5 kilograms (about 3.3 pounds) at birth and, at the authors' last follow-up in July 2025, mother and daughter were both doing well.
The condition, a molar pregnancy coexisting with a live fetus, has an estimated incidence of 1 in 20,000 to 100,000 pregnancies, the report says. Its authors, Julius Nteziyaremye and Stephen Waiswa of Busitema University's Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, write that to the best of their knowledge, it is the first such case reported in Uganda.
