Three rally cars originally owned by Scottish racing icon Colin McRae will be available to purchase at auction later this summer.
The late Lanark-born driver, who won the World Rally Championship 25 times, was an avid fan of collecting fast motors. According to Silverstone Auctions, they have been entrusted with the three vehicles, which have "come direct from his family".
The first and last rally cars he owned are being auctioned, as is his 1992 championship-winning Subaru. The latter — the Subaru Legacy RS Group ‘A — is set to fetch the highest price, and is estimated to go for between £380,000 and £450,000.
The 1977 Chrysler Sunbeam Ti Group ‘A’, which is believed to have been McRae's first rally car, is estimated to sell for between £80,000 and £100,000. Meanwhile, his 2005 Ford Escort MkII McRae is expected to fetch between £140,000 and £180,000.
Speaking about the Subaru, a Silverstone Auctions spokesperson commented: "This is very special, Colin’s 1992 British Championship-winning car and a personal favourite being offered to market for the first time directly from the McRae family, a unique opportunity."
In 1995, McRae became the first British driver and the youngest person to win the World Rally Championship Drivers' title. With 25 victories in the World Rally Championship, he held the record for the most wins in the series from 2002 to 2004.
He was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in 2007 near his home. His son and two family friends were also killed.
Silverstone Auctions' Classic Sale will take place at Silverstone Festival on 26 August.
