PlayStation Studios has gone through three founder-era leadership handoffs in 17 months. They are not identical departures, but they share one important detail: each studio turned to leaders who were already inside the organization.
Housemarque co-founder Ilari Kuittinen said Aug. 31 was his final day at the studio after 31 years. In his own LinkedIn post, Kuittinen said he had spent 33 years in the games industry and that Housemarque managing director Sami "Haxu" Hakala had formally stepped into the role on July 1, with Kuittinen supporting the transition through the end of August.
The other two transitions came at Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions.
Insomniac founder Ted Price announced his retirement in January 2025 and left the games industry at the end of March. In Sony Interactive Entertainment's announcement, Price said he had made the decision the year before and worked with Insomniac's senior leadership on succession. The studio promoted Chad Dezern, Ryan Schneider and Jen Huang as co-studio heads.
Sucker Punch's transition needs more careful wording. In December 2025, Sony announced that co-founder Brian Fleming was passing studio leadership to longtime developers Jason Connell and Adrian Bentley, effective Jan. 1, 2026. Sony's post did not say Fleming left the company immediately, and contemporaneous reporting said he would remain through the spring to help with the handoff. It is more accurate to count this as a founder leadership transition than as a December 2025 departure.
What Sony actually inherited
Housemarque was founded in 1995 by Kuittinen and Harri Tikkanen. It remained independent for 26 years before joining PlayStation Studios in 2021, following the launch of Returnal.
During that span, the studio moved from games such as Supreme Snowboarding and Super Stardust HD to Resogun, Returnal and the upcoming Saros. The important point is not that one founder personally created every part of that evolution. It is that PlayStation acquired a studio whose culture and decision-making had developed under the same leadership for decades.
Insomniac presents a similar continuity question. Price led the studio through the eras of Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, Resistance and Marvel's Spider-Man before handing control to three executives already embedded in the company.
The internal-successor pattern matters
This is the strongest evidence against reading the three transitions as a sudden leadership crisis.
Housemarque moved from Kuittinen to Hakala. Insomniac elevated Dezern, Schneider and Huang. Sucker Punch elevated Connell and Bentley. Across those three founder-era handoffs, Sony did not install an outside studio chief.
That does not prove every transition will work. It does show that the studios had succession structures in place instead of beginning an external executive search after a founder stepped back.
These were planned handoffs, not one identical event
The public evidence does not support describing all three as pressured exits.
Price explicitly described a year-long retirement plan. Kuittinen described a staged transition and said he was taking a break after leaving Housemarque. Sony framed Fleming's move as a handoff to longtime Sucker Punch leaders rather than a restructuring around his removal.
The harder question is what happens after the founders are no longer making day-to-day calls. Studios build habits that rarely appear in an org chart: which projects get protected, which ideas get cut early, how much risk is acceptable and what the studio believes it is best at making.
Internal promotions preserve more of that institutional memory than an outside hire would. They do not guarantee the same judgment.
What to watch next
The useful test will not be the next leadership announcement. It will be the next full development cycles under the new structures.
If Housemarque, Insomniac and Sucker Punch keep their identities while shipping major projects under their successor teams, Sony's promote-from-within strategy will look like disciplined succession planning. If those studios begin changing direction sharply, the founder departures will look more consequential in hindsight.
