Three people have been taken to hospital following a two-vehicle collision.
The emergency services rushed to the A19 near Sunderland shortly after 5pm on Thursday evening. Around five police vehicles, six ambulances and the fire service are understood to have attended the scene.
The collision occurred between the A1231 Sunderland Highway and A690 Durham Road (Herrington Interchange). It caused major delays for drivers, with traffic moving at around five mph. A diversion was set up via the A183.

The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) sent six resources to the scene and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS). They took three patients to Sunderland Royal Hospital in Sunderland by road.
A NEAS spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of a road traffic collision on the A19/A183 junction shortly after 5pm this evening.
"We dispatched six resources and requested support from Great North Air Ambulance, and three patients have been transported by road to Sunderland Royal Hospital."
