Three Liverpool players missing ahead of Real Madrid as Luis Diaz offers training boost

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was missing from training ahead of Wednesday's clash with Real Madrid - but there was more encouragement for Luis Diaz as he continues his recovery.

Henderson was named as a substitute for Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth, although he made his way off the bench after Jurgen Klopp revealed his skipper had been suffering from a slight cold.

There was no sign of the midfielder though as the Reds took part in an open training session before departing for Madrid. Stefan Bajcetic was also missing while Thiago Alcantara remains out, but Joe Gomez made a return after his recent injury lay-off.

Diaz, meanwhile, took part in a separate seesion on his own before the rest of the squad emerged at the AXA Training Centre.

Klopp offered an update on Gomez, Diaz and Thiago when speaking ahead of travelling to Bournemouth, suggesting the trio weren’t far off returning.

"Joey might be able to train at the beginning of the week,” he said. “Luis I hope during next week. After the international break then obviously for both is possible.

"Thiago we will see. None of them have trained yet with the team, and then we will see how that develops in the next couple of weeks and we will know more."

The Reds need a miracle to reach the Champions League quarter-finals, having lost 5-2 at Anfield to Carlo Ancelotti’s side, while they are not back in action until after the March international break following their trip to Madrid. Meanwhile, away clashes with Man City and Chelsea before a home meeting with league-leaders Arsenal await them in the space of eight days when they do return to action.

Liverpool will travel to Madrid on Tuesday afternoon after training, with it then becoming clear if Thiago and Gomez will be included in the travelling squad. Meanwhile, Klopp is set to offer an injury update at his latest pre-match press conference from the Bernabeu at 7pm UK time on Tuesday night.
