Threads - how to sign up as it reaches over 10 million users

Meta has launched its new app Threads today (July 6) and it has already reached more than 10 million users.

The Facebook and Instagram owner launched the app in the UK at midnight on Thursday. The app is linked to Instagram and appears to be a direct competitor to Twitter which has been receiving waves of backlash over its new user policies - the most recent being a limit on how many tweets a user could view a day.

After just being live for a few hours, the new social media app garnered 10 million sign-ups, according to Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg. He said earlier: “I think there should be a public conversations app with 1 billion+ people on it.

Threads is directly linked to Instagram so users can use that account to log in and get started. The process is fairly quick and easy this way, giving users the option to import their profile picture and external links that were included on their Instagram account.

Users can also choose to immediately follow any Instagram users that are on Threads. At the time of writing, Threads can only be accessed via the app available on iOS and Android.

Once the app is downloaded and opened, users will have the option to either import their existing Instagram account or create a new one where they can choose their name, bio, and profile picture.

Currently, users cannot interact on the new app without an account, although the California-based company hinted it will change this in the future. It's also important to note that all users under the age of 18 in the UK will automatically have a private profile when they join,
