Thousands of Shell Energy customers will receive an extra £150 payment from Wednesday (March 15).
Those who were paid the Warm Home Discount this year will be eligible and it means struggling households will have been given an extra £300 from the energy supplier this winter. Customers who are eligible for the payment won't need to apply for it, Shell Energy said.
The £150 will either be applied directly to your energy account or if you have a smart prepayment meter you will get the money as an automatic top-up. If you are on a traditional prepayment meter, you will receive a voucher, reports the Mirror.
The measure was part of a £50million support package from Shell which aimed to help its customers facing financial hardship during the current cost of living crisis. This package also included doubling the size of its hardship fund from £10 million to £20 million through to the end of 2024. More than 150,000 families will receive the extra payment from Shell Energy.
You will get the extra £150 from Shell Energy if you joined it on or before August 21, 2022, and you're eligible for the Warm Home Discount. You will be eligible for Warm Home Discount payment if you, or your partner, receive the Guarantee Credit portion of Pension Credit.
You may also qualify if you get a different “qualifying benefit” and you have high energy costs. The benefits include:
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
- Income Support
- Universal Credit
- Housing benefit
- Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits
- Pension Credit (Savings Credit)
The deadline for submitting a claim for the Warm Home Discount if you claim one of these benefits was August 21 2022. If you joined Shell on or after August 22, 2022, your previous supplier will pay your Warm Home Discount and sadly you won’t get the extra £150 top-up from Shell.
Tony Keeling, CEO of Shell Energy said: “In recognising the challenges faced by many households as a result of the cost of living pressures and high energy costs, we are providing additional support to those who need it most. By targeting those who are eligible for the Warm Home Discount, and funding a doubling of their payment, we’re providing direct support to those who we know are struggling.
"We have a package of measures and we will do everything we can to help those struggling this winter.”
