Blueberry recall in US sparks warning over listeria symptoms

  • Oregon Potato Company LLC has issued a voluntary recall of 55,689 pounds of frozen blueberries due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.
  • The recall has been updated to a Class I, indicating a reasonable probability that consumption of the product could lead to serious adverse health consequences or death.
  • The affected blueberries were distributed in Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin and Canada, but were not sold directly to consumers from retail stores.
  • No illnesses have been reported to date, but Listeria infection is a serious foodborne illness, ranking as the third leading cause of death from such illnesses in the United States.
  • Since the blueberries weren’t sold in stores, you may not realize if you’ve consumed any. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea for one to three days. Headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions are associated with more serious cases.
