Thousands of Irish households to be dealt major blow as energy provider introduces €10 per week hike

Households across the country are set to see their energy bills increase further from Friday.

Energia customers will see another blow to their pocket this week as the planned increases take effect from October 7.

The average customer will be hit with a 29 per cent increase in their electricity bills, while gas customers will notice a 39 per cent increase.

The change will impact over 160,000 electricity customers and 60,000 gas customers.

The increases will see the average electricity bill increase by €.9.82 and the average gas bill rise by €10.02 per week.

Dual fuel customers will also see an increase of 33 per cent on their bills or around €19.84 a week on average.

From Friday, the supplier is increasing the unit price of its electricity by 33.5 per cent and the unit price of its gas by 47.11 per cent.

However, its standing charge will remain the same.

There will be no increase to night rates for those customers on smart tariffs.

Speaking about the increase, the energy provider said it was forced to introduce the hikes as a result of “significant challenges”.

The news comes after Engeria customers faced increases in April when electricity and gas prices were hiked by just under 19 per cent.

However, it seems that hikes are unavoidable no matter who your energy provider is, as Electric Ireland, PrepayPower, Community Power, and SSE Airtricity all pushed up their supply costs on October 1.

Thankfully some relief is on the way as households are soon to receive €600 worth of energy credits announced in Budget 2023.

Domestic electricity customers will receive three instalments of €200 energy credits to help reduce electricity bills over the coming months.

The first payment will be made in November 2022. While the second credit will be made in January 2023, and the third in March 2023.

The Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme is part of the package of supports to combat the cost of living and applies to all domestic electricity accounts registered with an electricity supplier in the Republic of Ireland.

Similar to credits paid between April and June 2022, the payment will be automatic, and you will not need to apply for it.

You should see a ‘credit line’ on your bill in the amount of €176.22 (this is €200 excluding VAT). It has the identifier ‘Government Electricity Credit’ or an abbreviated version of this depending on your supplier (for example, Govt. Credit, Govt. Cr, Gov CR).

Suppliers have information on their websites with the exact dates the credit will show on their customers’ bills.

Those with multiple homes in Ireland with a domestic electricity account will also get the credit for each account.

If you use pre-paid electricity , your supplier should contact you by letter or email to explain how you would receive your credit.

Most pre-pay electricity meters will accept the €200 credit in full.

If you have an older pre-pay meter with a pre-pay limit, you can redeem your electricity credit over three separate top-ups over a few days.

This means the €200 electricity credit will be applied over three separate top-ups.

Suppose you are a tenant in rented accommodation, and you pay your landlord directly for your electricity rather than the electricity provider. In that case, your landlord should pass the credit on to you.
