Thousands of Bulldog owners hit with £800 warning

English and French Bulldog owners have been hit with a stark warning that could see their monthly outgoings mount up.

Owners can expect to fork out almost £800 a year on average for an English Bully. For its French counterpart, this cost is £656.76 annually.

English Bulldogs are sweet-natured, excellent with children, and don’t require too much exercise, but with this breed, you can expect an average insurance cost of £66.50 a month, according to specialists at A-Plan Insurance. Due to being flat-faced, English Bulldogs suffer from brachycephalic syndrome, which consists of long-term breathing problems as well as difficulty cooling down in warm weather.

French Bulldogs are favoured by many celebrities including David Beckham and Hugh Jackman, as their small size and quiet demeanour makes them loveable to say the least, but the breed is also brachycephalic like the English Bulldog. They are also prone to Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), which causes problems like back and neck pain and difficulty walking.

In third place is the German Shepherd, known to be one of the smartest and most loyal breeds. Insurance for one of these dogs is likely to set you back £38.15 a month, or £457.80 a year.

Over the years, German Shepherds have been bred to enhance some features which has led to lots of health issues, Hip Dysplasia being one of these; this condition consists of symptoms like groin pain and limping.

These are the top 10 most expensive dog breeds to insure, according to A-Plan:

  • English Bulldog - £66.50 a month
  • French Bulldog - £54.73 a month
  • German Shepherd - £38.15 a month
  • Labrador Retriever - £31.24 a month
  • Golden Retriever - £24.30 a month
  • Miniature Schnauzer - £24.16 a month
  • English Springer Spaniel - £23.20 a month
  • Cocker Spaniel - £22.72 a month
  • Crossbreed - £22.67 a month
