Thousands left in the dark after major power cut hits Lanarkshire town

Thousands of East Kilbride residents were left in the dark last night after a major power cut in the town.

SP Energy Networks have apologised, with 2500 customers affected in several areas and traffic lights at major junctions and roundabouts - including the Whirlies - also out.

The Village, Calderwood, East and West Mains were all hit with the outage just after 6pm.

Drivers also had to negotiate the junction at Calderwood Square and the Kingsgate roundabout at McDonalds, as well as the busy Whirlies, with no traffic lights in operation.

One told Lanarkshire Live : "It was like Wacky Races - some drivers weren't stopping. I am really surprised there weren't any accidents."

Another resident said: "We were told it was an underground fault and apparently quite complex to fix, so was all coming back in stages then our whole street lit up at the same time.

"We were told it could take up to 6am to fix but it came back well before that thankfully, maybe about four hours later."

A spokesperson for SP Energy Networks said: “Power supplies to around 2500 customers across the Village, Calderwood, East and West Mains areas of East Kilbride were affected following a network cable fault just after 6pm on Tuesday, April 26.

"Our engineers responded immediately, with supplies restored in just over three hours. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
