Reports from individuals fleeing the southern Gaza city of Rafah have shed light on the dire situation faced by those seeking refuge in Khan Younis. The UN's agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has estimated that close to 110,000 people have evacuated Rafah following an evacuation order issued by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
Upon reaching Khan Younis, many displaced individuals were met with a scene of utter devastation. A woman named Amana Al-Shagleh expressed her dismay, stating that Khan Younis was 'completely destroyed from top to bottom.' She highlighted the lack of essential facilities such as schools and housing, leaving many stranded on the streets.
Another individual, Fayez Abu Amsha, recounted his journey from Beit Hanoun to Rafah, only to find the situation in Khan Younis equally grim. The UNRWA school in the city, where many sought shelter, was described as 'totally and completely destroyed and uninhabitable.'
Amsha shared the challenges faced by his family, mentioning that they had resorted to occupying a classroom for temporary shelter. The dire living conditions in Khan Younis were further emphasized by an elderly lady named Fatama Al-Masri, who highlighted the lack of basic necessities such as water, electricity, and sanitation facilities.
The testimonies paint a stark picture of the hardships endured by those displaced by the conflict in Gaza. As the humanitarian crisis deepens, the need for immediate assistance and support for the affected population in Khan Younis becomes increasingly urgent.
